A question about soup

I have got a gammon joint which I am planning to boil up tomorrow, use some for sandwiches & make soup with the rest. I only have red lentils in the cupboard & was wondering if they would work just as well in the soup (as peas) ? I've never made a ham soup before so I'm not sure.
Thanks all

They'll be great with the ham;)
All pulses go well with all kinds of cured pork. Lentils and bacon, chickpeas and chorizo, split peas and ham.....0 -
Hi trigger,
That's how I make lentil soup.
Sweat an onion, diced carrots and a couple of cloves of garlic in some oil. Then add the stock from the gammon, some lentils, pepper and a tin of chopped tomatoes (optional). Simmer until the veg are all cooked and towards the end I pop in some of the left over gammon.
There are more recipes on this thread: Lentil soup
I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the replies together.

This is what I made at the weekend
DH cooked the gammon joint in apple juice and a spoon of marmalade. The leftover stock was cooked with lentils, chopped onion, potato, carrot, celery and garlic, a little streaky bacon (leftover gammon would be just as good). A squeeze of lemon juice before serving gave a lovely taste

I don't have any red pepper but I'll go with what I've got ! It's too cold to go out today, is snowing nearby & probably heading our way, so the kitchen's probably the best place to be !
Thanks all
