So, I suppose that it just comes down to personal preference then.

    Thanks for the replies.
  • either a good qualty leather (not a cheap one ike I have) or fabric. Cheap leather is awful, I used to have another sofa which was a soft leather and it was so much better than the one I have now

  • We have fabric sofas in our lounge but in our family room where the children and dogs run riot we have leather. I don't find it slippery and only cold if we've been out and the heating has been off. I really don't think you can beat leather. Mine isn't expensive because I have 6 small dogs and 2 children climbing over them and they fare OK. Even scratches from the dogs nails soon vanish when I get the leather treatment on it. I don't do it very often though only when they start to look really scratched.
  • i have 2 dogs who like to share the sofas so we bought leather and i would always do from now on. we have one dearer one and one cheaper one and i have to say i would pay a little more for the good ones. often 2 x 2 seaters or a 2 and a 3 are cheaper per seat than buying single chairs. plus depending on where you buy it never harms to ask for a discount;).

i can't imagine having to wash full sofa covers all the time (dogs, kids or just general use). at first i used a proper leather cleaner and treatment set. now i just use the leather wipes once a month or so which are often on BOGOF in stores, especially wilkinsons.

we also have a couple of folded up cotton throws for the seat areas which cost us 2.99 each in ikea years ago. when there is a muddy spot we just fold them on the other side (you can fold about 8 ways before you have to wash them:rolleyes:) - but these can then be washed on a high temp or even bleached.

i think this is the best of both worlds - plus if you get a little chilly, voila a blanket!

Oh no, I can't make up my mind now!
My wife is leaning toward fabric ones but after what has just been posted she may think otherwise!

I bought our leather suite >20 years ago and when the time comes to replace it I will buy leather again, both daughters have bought leather too.
I have found that they are much more durable, easier to keep clean and comfortable too.
