If you want something cheap, PC world are doing a deal on an Advent 7000A laptop for £349. You might have seen the adverts. I bought the advent 7000 for £399, same spec but with an additonal dvd re-writeer installed. I just wanted something cheap but reliable, and Advent haven't let me down in the past.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no. 038 :j0

I am currently looking for the 7000, but PC world are completely sold out! I notice they have taken the laptop off the web now.
do you think it is worth paying the extra £50 for the writer?, I must choose a laptop before Xmas.0 -
That's what they told me over the phone, they have sold out of the 7000A (£349) and the 7000 was starting to sell out. Although when I got to my store they said they had hundreds of the 7000 in stock!! To be honest I haven't found anything cheaper and my previous Advent I had for 3 years, hammered it for 8+ hours a day & it's still going strong so I am selling it to pay for a new version! I was looking for something under £400 and this one is quite smart for £399. I certainly don't feel cheated cos I paid an extra £50 for the writer. Not had chance to use it yet though!Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no. 038 :j0

It looks like I will have to go for the £399 model as well,
the cheapest way I can see doing this is to go through Curry's (all part of the dixons group). They offer 5% discount to NHS or teachers, plus if you pay with your egg money card you get 10% cashback from egg (must go through egg link). Alternatively, Dixons have a code for £25 off a 300 spend or same 5% discount as curries and pc world for NHS staff.
every little helps I suppose...0 -
As long as you stay away from Dell, you'll be fineThat, is an excellent question...0

On the whole, Dell are excellent. Their laptops have a good reputation, I shall be buying in the new year. A pal of mine sells them on ebay - top spec jobs has sold over 150 units and not had any problems whatsoever.
Myosin may have had problems, but its not indicative. A friend of mine with his own solicitors practice will only use Dell.

See other thread about the IBM Thinkpad R50e which was in Staples a couple of months ago at £399. It has built-in wireless connectivity. There may still be a few out there.
Got one for my son and he is well-pleased with it.

I was going to see if I could get one of the staples ones tonight, but looking at another thread I see it doesn't have a trackpad although this is difficult to see form the picture.
can anyone confirm this? - I'm really used to a trackpad now - the little nipple things drive me nuts
cheers,
