I'll pop back tomorrow if I remember

I used to have some Philips ones and I hated them, they took ages to get bright and even then they were a very dull yellowy light. Then I got some of the 1p ones from Tesco and they're so different, they get bright in a matter of seconds and it's a whitish light instead of yellow.Dum Spiro Spero0

look at biobulbs. The light they give off is amazing, bright and white so no eyestrain. Our house is full of them now and there won`t be any SAD in our house this winter
I absolutely hate the normal yellow ones too!!!0 -
I don't know about saving energy but anything we save on energy goes on bulbs around here!
We rent a new build, completed just over a year ago. It has energy saving bulbs in quite a few rooms, and they are a type that you can't get in ordinary shops and costs a lot of money. When one went, we had to buy the replacement over the internet, and with delivery it was around £20. It takes around 15 minutes to reach full brightness, and it is never enough to work by. I use a halogen lamp to boost the light around the sofas where we read and my desk in the bedroom.
In addition, there are spotlights in areas where we need plenty of light - kitchen, bathrooms, halls, etc. There must be at least 50 around the house. They blow regularly, and after experimenting with a cheap replacement, that lasted just 3-4 weeks, we went back to the ones that are £1 or more each. In addition, we have just two ordinary bulbs in wall light fittings. They rarely last more than a month for some reason.
We have easily spent £100 on lightbulbs over a year. Fancy lighting? If I was buying a house, I'd be looking for something easy to fit, cheap to replace and lovely and bright. I hate dim lighting even in the bedroom. And since we have all the others, I can't see there is any environmental advantage.
It's a cheap house to heat though. No heating yet ...Mortgage started on 22.5.09 : £129,600Overpayments to date: £3000June grocery challenge: 400/6000 -
The yellow light ones are the pits!
We got some 20watt=100watt ones off Ebay, which give out a white light, changed them yesterday for the old yellow light ones, in the diningroom, bedside lamp and 2 in the front room.
They are SO much better. We had all the curtains pulled shut in the front room last night and the white light was lovely.

Hi Primrose,
I've moved your thread over to the Green and Ethical Moneysaving board to see if anyone there has a suggestion for alternative bulbs that may help.

Does anybody know whether the Bio bulbs which have been mentioned will be suitable for reading lampshades? Most of the ones we have, including those near armchairs close to where we sit and read warn that 100 watts is the maximum light fitting which can be used. Do they come in only one wattage, or a selection of different power levels?0

Yes that's where I got my Bio bulb !
It cost about £8 and didn't last very long so i didn't buy another one. It was lovely while it lasted though.
If I was rich I'd have loads and be much greener but sadly I'm not so can't.
I do what I can though.
Just looked they're £14.75 EEek!

I find the new ones tend to be better, they brighten up quicker, and are smaller. Tesco have got an offer on until 28th October, £1 each or 5 for 40pence!0
