Beers of the world.

Had a mad idea for an xmas present (why I am thinking about this already I am not sure, usually a couple of weeks before xmas before I do my shopping).

But my bro in law I thought I get his something different this year and go for a selection of beers from around the globe, but I am not sure if there such a thing out there, I gathered there be sites like all the wine ones out there but google is not my friend it seems.

I was wondering if anyone else has done this and or could recommend sites and type of beer as I am pretty much t total. He a stella kind of person, no pun inteaded.

Cheers

  • Might not be quite what you are after but BHS do a pack of 5 from round the world, they are about £15 I think. Also Asda are pretty good, you could make a set yourself and get a trendy bag or box to put them in.

I've done this a few times - my dad's birthday was in the summer during Euro 2008 so I got him a beer from every country in the Euros. Went down very well!

www.beersofeurope.co.uk do mixed/customised crates which are ok value but they have an enormous selection and they're not just European, as the title would suggest. Tesco has an increasingly good selection of world beers. Round my way there's a few off-licences which sell world beers. If you're around Manchester or Sheffield I can recommend some but if not I'd suggest searching for world beer off-licences or something like that near where you live.

As for types of beer, if he's a Stella sort of guy he's probably into his European lagers - Czech ones are particularly good - Pilsner Urquell, Budvar etc. I'm quite into Belgian and German beers too. There's some great German lagers (probably the best in the world in my opinion) such as Warsteiner and Bitburger. Aside from that lagers can be a bit samey. It might be worth trying to get some from bizarre/exotic places - I've had Lapland, Carribbean, South Korean beer in the past, all nice enough but nothing special.

If you're looking for something a little bit different but not too different to lager I'd suggest American or Australian pale ales - Sierra Nevada/Coopers - can get both in Tesco. German wheat beers are beautiful too - Schneider Aventinus is my all time favourite but if you can't get that then Paulaner or Erdinger are nice too. If he likes Leffe he'll probably like Chimay, Rochefort etc - strong but lovely. Oh and Peroni Gran Reserva is one of my favourites too - should be able to get that in Tesco.
  • Friend did this for an 18th birthday, went round and bought 18 beers from 18 different countries via mainly supermarkets and some from the likes of Oddbins. Cost around £25 for 18 bottles.
