Search for my Grandads Pension Provider

My grandad retired last year and is certain that he paid into a pension for about ten years from 1980-1990. Trouble is the company has changed hands numerous times, he himself has moved house numerous times and cannot remeber a lot about it.

How does he go about finding out what and if he has an amount unclaimed or unpaid ???

I would have thought an agency somewhere could search his national insurance number to confirm any contributions made in his name.

Any advise would be very useful
