I have an M & S cookbook circa 1978 that suggests moulding round a baked bean tin with several layers of foil. For 4 cakes it specifies the quantity of an 8 inch diameter cake and baking in the centre of the oven for 1 3/4 - 2 hours at gas mark 1(140c 275f)

I once baked some christmas cakes in terracotta plantpots as gifts..when the cakes were done, took them out, then decorated the pots, wrapped the cakes in cellophane and put them back in! They went down very well!!

Little Sis uses clean tuna tins to make small Christmas cakes as gifts for her neighbours. She makes up the usual amount of cake mix and spreads it between 10/12 former tuna tins.Could use mini loaf tins too -try Lidl.

I once made a fairy castle cake for a friend's daughter's birthday, & made the turrets in the tall baked bean tins, it worked a treat :T
in fact too well, it looked so pretty that no-one wanted to cut it

& I used to bake bread in those big cans you get beer kits in, lovely round slices :)

i know someone who makes individual christmas cakes in bean tins for a christmas fair ... they are always very popular with people who live alone or bought for people on their own as a present.

  • same sort of idea, not cakes though, when i am cooking a roast dinner and using tinned veg i normally just pop off the lid and put these in the oven with the meat etc. saves on washing up lol
