it's probably best if you read the more accurate version without the HPC spin that has been put on it to appeal to the general public... no need to get so angry guys... the only thing it's probably not as much fun to read... the only thing it's probably not as much fun to read...

Yes, but the outrageous thing is that these academics are proposing to give BTL's tax breaks which are not available to people who buy their own homes. It is essentially a capitalist accumulative policy which allows the BTL haves [who already have their own house] to have more at the expense of the have not renters.
 Well yes....that IS capitalism!(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Why do labour voters continue to vote Labour, when then continue to kick their own voters in the teeth?
I have today received a letter from my Labour MP, about a letter I sent to the Housing Minister, Yvettte Cooper MP about the poor state of the private rental sector. It appears from this letter that Labour doesn't care about the typical labour voter who doesn't own their own house.
I became an accidental str last year and have been appalled by how some people have to live and what they are forced to live like for fear of retaliation from their LL. From reading this site and others, I have noticed that there are some very strange people indeed, who have frighteningly, become LLs
Labour voters, why do you vote for a party that doesn't care about you?RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

Bluntly the council have sold off masses and masses of council houses cheap and now realise that with the "miracle economy" no longer supporting people borrowing away to maintain their over expensive houses and lifestyles as debt retreats like the tide going out there are going to be an awful lot of people out on the street.
With no where to put them and no money to put into housing the government needs rental housing to rent for these people.
Without BTL landlords there will be no houses to let.
This is a real problem for the government, last thing they need is BTL landlords getting out of the game, they need them to increase their stock.
Hence these proposals, along with proposals to regulate them.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

They need very strong proposals to weed out the dross and from the letter I received from Labour MPs this morning, it is not going to be this government that is be doing that. Labour voters take note.
A lot of the me-too-but- to-let only seemed to have got into it because they thought house prices would rise for ever (ie Fergus). I'm not sure how many real professional LLs there are in the UK. Not having a job does not qualify a LL as a professional, it is their business attitude that does.
I did meet one true professional who ran his BTL empire as business and offered a good service to his clients. He had taken decades to built up his house numbers. One of his sons had become a plumber and the other an electrician, so any maintenance problems were sorted the day they were reported to the LL. They didn't mind about things such as the tenants putting up their own pictures so long as they filled the holes in when they left. I was talking to one of this LLs sons who said they had learned the hard way that they get taken to court if they don't play fair, as they rented to students from one of the top universities. So either the would be lawyer students sued them or their parents did. They never had an empty property as students were all to happy to tell other students who the good (and the bad) lls were.
The government needs to license all LLs and ban any the local councils private rental section, have had trouble with.
The LLs that shocked me the most were 2 LLs on this site that said it was ok to leave a tenant without a boiler in the winter for 3 weeks as a tenant should not expect to be treated any differently to how their own families were. When I asked how they would manage if it was their family without a boiler for 3 weeks in the winter, one said she would go to a relatives house:eek:RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

What a bonkers idea but Labour is so desperate they might just try it. Rather than reduce taxes for BTL chancers they should be taxed out of existence.Krusty & Phil Madoff, 1990 - 2007:

We tried that before and it is very expensive. You'll have to accept a higher tax bill as a result and also that people who are not in social housing are subsidising those that are.0
