Economy white bread. 19p for 800g loaf. OK for toast bu not particularly nice raw - a bit doughy and grey but if you're strapped for cash it would be ok.
I think the old baker must have left or something, it's not like it used to be.
Leicester Humberstone Gate has also slowly but surely been doing away with the economy range - probably because it sold better than their own brand stuff eg. reduced fat spread 25p, gone. Next cheapest is about 45p. Today I went to buy some flour - none. I had to buy the 44p stuff. I was not a happy camper. I'm going to have to start shopping online again.0 -
and they never have 1kg bags of caster sugar in mine. theres always a space where it should be, but its 59p for 500g, and 79 for 1kg, but they never have it in.0

I never buy caster sugar, it's too expensive. ;D I always use granulated, never noticed the difference when I'm baking. At the end of the day you are paying them 20p+ to grind the sugar in half. I can do that myself for a lot less than that.0

i only buy it for shortbread, cos its not the same with granulated i find. although i'm sure if i whizzed it in the blender it may be better, may give that a go.0

Supermarkets aren't stupid. I think a lot of the economy lines work on the same principle as reward/loyalty points.
I'm pretty sure that a lot of economy products are 'loss leaders', ie the idea is that they lure you into the shop with promises of baked beans for a halfpenny a tin, with the idea that you'll spend your extra money you save on crap you don't need, such as luxury items with a huge markup - so the net gain is same or even more for the supermarket.
With stuff like baked beans, kidney beans, fruit etc there's not much they can do to adulterate them, but with anything complex like cakes etc a lot of them will be muck. It's just a case of using your discretion (and sites like this) to get the best value.
Any thoughts on this theory?0 -

I noticed in Sainsburys here the other day that they had enormous 5kg bags of both granulated and caster sugar, not quite sure who needs that much sugar ::)student100 hasn't been a student since 2007...0 -

I do! I bake a lot and it's easier and sometimes cheaper to get the 5kg bag."There are only two lasting bequests we can hope to give our children; one of these is roots, the other wings" - Hodding Carter
