Hi Everybody newbe here. My partner has a debt with a bank that his ex wife was meant to settle in their divorce but instead she has lumbard us with it, We first recieved a letter to the occupier and then one addressed to my husband saying he should phone them and confirm he does live here, I googled them and do not like what I read! I am at home alone with my 18 mth old daughter during the day and I am worried they will come round demanding money or start trying to take our possesions. We haven't phoned them or anything yet I was just wondering if they do knock at my door what I have to say to them something technical so they realise they can't walk over us! Any help would be much appreciated!!!

Hi Steffe,
Not an expert in these things (they will be along shortly, fear not!
), but just a few things:
1. Don't Panic! The people here have been thought this and more, and can give you all kinds of useful advice!
2. DON'T call them! These people are scaremongerers and bullies on the phone, and will use any trick they can think of to frighten money out of you. If you refuse to call them, you stay in control.
3. If/When you write to them (and the good folk here will be able to help you with what to write), NEVER sign your name, print it only. Some of these companies are not above forging signatures to try and get what they want...
4. Seriously, don't panic! They legally can't come in (or even round, I don't think) without a court order unless you invite them, so all you have to do is tell them where to go (preferably via the letterbox!:rotfl: ) - nothing technical required! Although if you want something legal and technical, we can always give you a hand writing something...
*hugs* Hang in there, there are ways and means of dealing with these 'people'

Thank you so much! If i was on my own I'd be ok but I am worried for my little girl, I don't want them frightening her or anything, I've started locking my front gate so they can't get in to our garden! I am sitting tight and hanging in there, they have tried phoning and leaving messages like "hello its stuart give us a ring" as if they are just a friend or something!! They really are cheeky! Thank you for your help and any other help would be much appreciated!!0

If they do phone , always ask for their details first . Then if its a collection company and they ask if you are
say no . Never answer or confirm any details on the phone , it is your right not to . Be calm and firm , just put phone down . The natural reaction is to panic and get stressed , this is what they rely on , they will then try to pressurise you into paying something there and then . This you must never do. No payment should be made with a debit card , it has been known that more than a agreed amount is taken .
Now ONTO THE DEBT ITSELF . Was an agreement made in writting on the settlement of the debt between your partner and his ex ? If it was verbal , its not worth the paper its written on . So he may have a fight on his hands .We will need afew more details to suggest any thing you can do .
Was it a unsecure loan ? Credit card ? Give us some detail and I am sure we can help.0
