How long before the tax man visits?

Shouldn't and cannot say much as I am a senior investigator for HMRC (and this should in no way be taken officially), but I would advise you that our department can & do investigate your affairs upto 6 years later and indeed can go back upto 20 years should fraud be suspected. I warn you, we will pick on ANYONE we suspect, using all manner of methods to target you. But having said that, we do indeed have resource limitations so you'll probably be laughing. But my friend & colleague has just hammered some poor milkman for several thousand so....
And you're also legally obliged to retain ALL records for 6 years. Oh, and us VAT-inspectors are even worse so make sure you register and pay correctly there also!

Now you know I'm sure I'd heard that VAT were recruited and trained to be especially evil, maybe now I'll believe it!
