If the work was negligent and dangerous try complaining to trading standards. Also, in cases of negligence I think you could sue the builder personally and not just the company. I could be wrong but worth looking into.
I'd certainly sue the company out of existence on principal.

Yep - go to Trading Standards.
And what about some press publicity to shame your builder? Contact your local paper (or me if you want national press! I'd have a go at the builder purely on principle....and the fact that he may be 'stuffing up' other customers as well. Even a minor problem could stop someone else from being put in the same position as you. Go to trading standards, local papers etc....and see what you can do. There are a lot of builders out there that use bankruptcy as a way out of their commitments, we all would like to employ Mr Baseball Bat, cheaper and more effective than a solicitor, not a good idea though. For now, move bedrooms and get a recommendation for a good builder, see some of the work and speak to the clients. As for the debt, a lot of people in this country are struggling to make ends meet, saving is a distant memory. I personally am not convinced on the benefit of property ownership, I do eat meat, I don't wear slippers.
Sell up and rent before the home buyers pack kicks in, let the buyer sue the surveyor when they are wearing a chimney pot as a hat.

Thanks to all respondents. To those of you who suggested suing the builder:
1. I have spent a lot of money researching whether I can 'get' this builder on negligence (which would mean I could sue him personally), and the professional opinion is no. DESPITE the fact that the concrete floor is the consistency of porridge. DESPITE the fact that the soil stack vents into the loft (which is potentially explosive - not a good idea to have a loft filling up with methane).
Suing the builder personally would, AFAIK, be the only way to force him into personal bankrupcy.
2. There is no point in suing the company out of existence, even if they hadn't already folded, since British law has NOTHING to stop him setting up a new company (with very similar name) and starting all over again. I now know he's already done this several times (allegedly).
