Please don't go down this route. There are so many bacteria and viruses that are spread via the faecal route. You have no idea what may be lurking in the sewage and you are seriously exposing yourself to unacceptable risk.

Babies poo is a completely different thing as a baby's gastrointestinal tract hasn't developed the kind of nasties that will be contained in raw sewage from the mains.

Soaking in napisan will NOT eradicate the type of viruses that may be present.

Also please don't try to salvage ANYTHING in the basket as any potential infectious agent will have spread throughout the lot. Even if some items only show light soiling they will also be contaminated

And with babies poo the nappies have liners, which hold the poo and are binned, it's not directly on the nappy.

What a lovely person you are though, to even consider doing such an awful job on behalf of someone else!

Just wanted to say thanks and also to say I did take your advice :o I did retrieve some stuff (please don't be horrified it wasn't contaminated at all after professional advice see below)

The clothes etc were all sodden and horrible so are binned. I also have had advice from the company appointed by the insurer who know about sewage so I now know the full picture. They advised on everything to do so I know what is ok and what isn't.

It's a big job to get this place sorted now but I've found the tenant somewhere really nice to live, we're working round the clock to finish it this week with brand new kitchen etc and I'm moving all her furniture and possessions out lock stock and barrel whilst her place is all put right again, and she can stay in the new place for as long as she needs it.

    Sorry for my ignorance

That was not "ignorance" - you were trying to do your very best for someone and deserve a big pat on the back!
