hi im writing in this as martin lewis's site said last mth every1 should be getting back £60 tax back from government if you were on starting rate which has now been scrapped due to 20%tax.However,i never recieved this rebate.were we not meant to get it in the end? Also, martin's site mentioned we would then claim £10 each mth until april as government was to issue total £120 back to those eligible for amount of tax back
can anyone enlighten me as to what is happenening in this regard?

  • It depends whether you are self-employed or employed/in receipt of a company pension.

If you are employed/company pension receipient your tax code should have changed in September and you should have received an extra £60 in your net pay or pension income. From October onwards it should be an extra £10 per month in your income, which will tot up to £120 over the year. The basic tax code should now be 603L.

If you have a pension or are employed, you need to check with your pension company, or your HR dept or payroll dept if you are employed, to see what is happening with your tax.

If you are self-employed then you will have to wait until your 2008/09 self assessment tax return has been processed, and you will pay slightly less tax on your income, but as your 2008/09 balancing payment isnt due until 31 Jan 2010 you have quite a wait.

I think some people have been expecting a cheque for £60 direct from the taxman, but it doesnt work like that i'm afraid.

Hope that makes things clearer for you.
