CCA and student loans - does it apply?

Hi, just been reading the FAB thread on debt help, esp regarding CCAs. Would having/not having a CCA be relevant when dealing with the student loans company? Both myself and dh are in schtick with (seperate?!) debt collection companies after getting into arrears, and they're being really difficult. Could I ask for a copy of my CCA? Will I have signed one?
Am going to phone tomorrow and haggle down the monthly payments - feeling bolder after spending the last few days digesting Martin's Money Diet book
Here's hoping. Oh, and if anyone hasn't tried them, I phoned the local CAB debtline and they were soooo friendly and helpful. Have sent me sample letters to send to creditors to negotiate lower repayments, and they all include "I have being advised by Debtline..." which feels like having your big bruv standing behind you when going to confront the school bully.
