BHS Gold Card

Thanks to all those that replied about the BHS 20% weekend.

Unfortunately the furniture section only has 10%.

Anyway we ordered a sofa for £1700 ang 10% off this. We were then told that by opening a gold card account and paying a £360 deposit we would be entitled to 15% off the balance (£1168) leaving £993 to pay instead.

The confusing thing is that BHS don't give the discount but the card providers GE Finance do.

Anybody done this before?

Also got a free bottle of cava and belgian chocs for opening the account today.

  • hi this isnt really answering your question but ...my partners auntie works at BHS and says that NOBOBY in the store can give any discount off for getting a gold card. some cashiers may say that you do but thats just so you will open an account because every month they have a target. im sure if T.S> found out they wouldnt be too impressed!! So if any of the staff offer the discount at BHS please beware!!!

GE Finance are the company behind many store cards.

They often offer discounts off off your first purchase to entice you to take out the store card - their interest rates are normally very high. I bought some furnature from a now defunct company many years ago by takinhg out a GE Finance card.

The deal I got was something like 20% off for an ex-display table (funded by the shop) + 10% off the total cost (funded by the shop) . Then I was advised to take out a store card to get a further 15% off. The 15% off is not funded by the shop but by GE Finance, who will deduct the amount from the balance owing.
As soon as I got home, I called GE Finance to get a closing balance and I asked to pay

Of course, they were not happy. They hadn't got any paperwork and suggested I go back to the shop to cancel the agreement. When I said I only did it to get the 15% discount they were even less happy.

But...it is perfectly legal. If that is what was offered, take the deal!
Remember to pay it off quickly as the interest rate is high (usually).

The only possible downside is that it could possibly affect your credit rating (I'm not 100% sure) - however if you already have a good rating and don't do this too often, I can't see a problem. Go for it! :)
