Tax rebate for new mums going part-time?

Hi, I'm due to return to work in December after a full year of maternity leave. I used to work full time but I will be returning to work 3 days per week. I was told by someone that I might be eligible for a tax rebate, as my earnings for this financial year will have been calculated based on my full-time income.

Could anyone tell me more and where can I get information?

I've never had any cause to contact the Inland Revenue and I'm bewildered by their website and don't know where to start!

You can only get a refund if you've paid something. As your post indicates you haven't paid any tax in this year (Apr 08 - Apr 09) .... then there can't be anything due back. However, on return to work, you should pay much less tax up to April as you will have unused portions of your Personal Allowance (£6035) to catch up on. Which is possibly what your 'someone' was meaning.

But you do need to consider last year - if you left work in late 2007 - then there will be unused allowances to consider up to Apr 08? Unless they were all taken up with maternity pay?

  • Ah right! I think I received full maternity pay until end of February and statutory maternity thereafter, so it probably won't affect me much then. Shame! I need to plan my babies more effectively... ;-)
