:j I just wanted to to thank everybody for their advice.
I wrapped the cake in paper, I put a pan of water in the oven as well, but I think I have discovered what the the main problem was......... the oven was heating to a whole 60C hotter than it should be.
I bought an oven thermometer and could not believe that when I had turned the dial to 160 and let the oven warm to temperature it was in fact a whopping 220C:eek:.
I always knew that you should make adjustments for fan ovens but blimey!!!
Anyway the long and short of it is, is that I have fab looking cake wrapped up safe in loads of greaseproof paper waiting to be fed copious amounts of brandy:D
THANK YOU EVERYONE

I got it in the local hardware store and it cost £5.99.
I wasn't sure whether it was worth it and was stood in the store oohing and aahing, trying to decide whether to buy it or not, and what was the point if if just said the same as the oven..................but I am so glad that I did, because it would have been about £10.00 worth of ingredients wasted (not to mention time and effort)
