Just been made redundant :(

My husband-to-be has just been made redundant today. We're getting married next week

We're just about to exchange contracts on our new house too - we have to move out of our rented flat. We don't have any choice but to carry on with our purchase because we'll be homeless in a few weeks if we don't.

Once we've moved, we'll be able to stay afloat for a maximum of 3 months before our savings are gone.

I can't work at the moment due to poor health - that and the fact I'm the carer to my mum and her husband, I wouldn't have time to work even if I could. I'm seriously stressed.

Is there anyone out there with words of wisdom or who can point us towards a work from home job? Or anything?

  • No words of wisdom but just wanted to say I'm really thinking of you both at what must be a dreadful time. It's so scary at the moment and just goes to show that none of us know what's round the corner.

    Big hugs

Are you claiming Careers Allowance? Is your mum claiming Attendance allowance?
If not is this possible as it could inject some for of income.
  • Thank you both :)

We're not claiming anything at the moment, except incapacity benefit for me.

Mum's going to speak to her dr next Tuesday about me becoming their official carer - I wouldn't have a clue on how to go about her claiming. I might call the DSS and ask them.

I've never heard of Careers Allowance? Is that the same as Jobseekers Allowance? My fiance has called the DSS about Jobseekers allowance and as he's getting paid until the end of today he's got to call back tomorrow to persue the claim - he'll be officially unemployed by then.
  • i really wouldnt go ahead with house sale, go on the housing board for more advice.
  • I think I'll do that, thank you.
  • Poor you, I agree with bikerqueen for goodness sake don't exchange contracts on your house, you are better off in rented and if you struggle with that you will be re-housed or get help. If your new purchase is repossessed you will have debt problems too.

Things will work themselves out eventually, my husband to be lost his job 3 weeks before our wedding and then our car broke down the night before! That was years ago and we survived and you will too.

    Good luck

Firstly, DO NOT exchange contracts on the house. Unemployment is high at the moment, getting higher, and jobs are much harder to come by. By going through with this house purchase, you are relying on the fact that your OH will get a new job pretty much straight away, and this would be an irresponsible risk to take in such a poor economic climate. I know renting isn't ideal, but it's better than taking such a huge risk, as we wouldn't want to see you losing your home. When renting, your OH might have to tell a small porkie pie about being made redundant (or just not mention it), and show his past 3 months wage slips...

Here's the link to claiming carer's allowence:
    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/CaringForSomeone/MoneyMatters/DG_10012522

You can't claim if you earn more than £95 a week, and I presume your incapacity benefit will count towards this earning...

Your OH is doing the right thing signing on for JSA. Perhaps you could help him re-vamp his CV so make him look fabulous on paper, then help him look for jobs to apply to. He could put his CV online (monster or reed) to see if that brings up any jobs.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

I'd get on the phone to your local Citizen's Advice Bureau - they are a mine of information. Your OH should make his appointment to get JSA the very second after he is made redundant. Also on his first appointment he should take a copy of his CV and copies of any job applications / job adverts that he is looking at.

It must be a terribly difficult time for you - I wish you all the best.
  • Thanks everyone, I was clutching at whatever straws I could get hold of yesterday. Today, reality has hit home and we're making all the necessary phone calls.

    Ho hum.

Why do you have to move out of the flat? Sure you've given notice but unless the landlord has someone lined up, I'm sure they'd be happy to keep you on.
