Placement Year

in Cutting tax
Hello
I have just returned to University having taken a year out to work in industry. My placement began in June 2007 and therefore finished towards the end of June 2008. When I left the company I was given a P45. I subsequently went to work for a previous employer so gave them the P45 when I started work. As I only worked part-time over the summer, my gross income to date is still less than the personal allowance for this year (however, it is reasonably close). The amount of tax that I have paid is in the £hundreds.
Is it possible, that if I ask the employer who I worked for over the summer to give me a P45 (as I no longer work there), to can claim back this tax that I have paid? I phoned the tax office today and am being sent a P50. Could I fill this in stating the amount I have earnt during the summer (although I am not sure what this is) or would it be best to go down the P45 route?
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks,

You have to go down the P45 route - HMRC cannot guess how much tax you paid over the summer.0

Thanks for the replies so far.
In reply to jimmo - As I am in my final year things are pretty busy now and I don't really expect to work that much/at all at Christmas. If it means getting £hundreds back versus paying 20% tax on a small number of hours, I guess it would seem worthwhile (unless you earn a massive hourly rate that is!).0 -
Ok, so I've now got meself (well it's on the way) a P45 from my employer. Does anyone now the best route to proceed? I've phoned the tax office and they said that I can only proceed if I am guaranteed NOT to work again this tax year. Which form do I need to fill out?
Thanks.0
