Creditor trying to make me feel guilty

I've had one of my business creditors send me an email laying a guilt trip on me - basically he said he'd defended my integrity to others, including his accountant and that I'd made him look like a fool by declaring bankruptcy!
I feel really annoyed now. I know I had a good relationship with him, but I really didn't go into business with the thought that I was going to go bankrupt and would do so just to make him feel foolish!
At least my personal debts are with 'impersonal' banks who won't try this on me. Making the decision to declare bankruptcy is difficult enough without having other people make you feel guilty.
Right, rant over! I'll now go and have a cup of tea and continue with my studies.

Send him a nice letter/email with thisThe triumph of hope over experience

Depending on whether you want to maintain a relationship with this 'person' (replace word in inverted commas with expletive of your choice), would you feel better to send a dreadfully polite email back saying how terribly sorry you are that your personal misfortune has had such a detrimental effect on his life?:D
On second thoughts, just have your cuppa and think peaceful thoughts and ignore the !!!!!!. Not worth the stress, but really you could do without it!! ...0 -

Exactly....
Don't feel guilty, put it behind you, you are on a forward roll now.BR 08/05/2008

The way things are going, give it 6 months and he'll probably be doing the big BR as well!
I used to work for this guy who went ape when a business went into liquidation owing him money - he threatened them and everything. 18 months later he had to do exactly the same.

Um...
It might have been karma; it might have been that unpaid debt (to his business) which pushed him down the route to bankruptcy.
We don't know. But smaller businesses are much more vulnerable than the huge creditor organisations.
If they lose out on a few grand, because the debtor has gone bankrupt, then it can tip the scales for them.
I can understand why people are trying to reassure the OP, and I don't want to make anyone feel guilty. However, I know a couple of people with small businesses, so I understand their vulnerability.0 -

Fair points coolcait, and I agree that noone wants to see small businesses intentionally stiffed (I run one myself), but if a customer goes down owing you money and their situation is so bad they are personally going bankrupt, I dont think its on to try and lay a guilt trip on them. Business is business, its not personal.
Of course I'd have a different opinion about Ltd companies going under to clear business debts to small businesses then starting up again right away, but thats kind of off topic.House Voluntary Repo Jan 2007: £360,000Went Bankrupt Sep 2007: £255,000 (ay carumba!)Discharged 11 months Aug 20080 -

Yes, smaller businesses are more vulnerable, which is why I'm bankrupt myself - customers who couldn't/wouldn't pay. I just didn't need the guilt-trip when I've already lost my business and my home.0 -
I would ignore him, dont waste your time replying, you will only do it in anger and as a good friend always tells me, words typed in anger can never be wiped out.
As you say you have lost everything yourself, I could understand this guy if you were still sitting in your lovely home with cash stashed in the loft a couple of rembrants and a ferrari on the drive but you are not.
I also appreciate however how hard things are right now and small businesses are suffering, but it was BUSINESS at the end of the day you were not bosom buddies so ignore it and move on now. You need to get your start to a new life going. If he persists then I would reply but would threaten him with legal advice for harrassment.
