Lowells / Red - defaults

Hi this is my first post and i need some help / advice please.

Around 3 years ago i had a capital one credit card, i changed bank and address at the same time (bit of weird thing to do i know now), i changed all debts over fine except capital one, when i phoned them they had no information on me - almost as though i never existed, however i was aware i owed around £450 - £500, however after trying to contact them and them saying they never knew me i figured they will come to me when they realise i owe them money.

I never heard anything until around may this year and it was from a company called lowells saying they had bought the debt off capital one and the amount outstanding was £800!! I couldn't believe such a hike however regardless of this i was more concerned about the fact i had 2 defaults in my name off them one from August 2007 and one from Feb 08 - however the first time i heard anything was like i said around may time. Any advice as to whether they can do this??

Also i thought i should pay so they took £100 off me on my phone call then 2 weeks later tried to take the whole amount out of my account, to which i told them no chance and the gave it back and said they would set me up on direct debit of £150 per month. they took the first payment, then no more for 2 month and now i got a letter off red saying they have the debt off lowells for the outstanding amount!!

What should i do? i am aware i owe original money but i thought the £300 - £350 extra was steep also im really annoyed about the defaults as i dont believe they should be there as i was unaware of any contact. Any help please at all.

Thanks

    Hi Hinder,

Im not able to give you all the answers you need , But wanted to say that Red/lowells are the same company.. They also I think use the name Hamptons,& send postcards saying you have to contact such * such, as a mattter of urgency ..!!

They are bullies, and the correspondence is more & more aggressive, as the letters are sent.

Firstly dont let them bully you into paying more than you can afford EVEN when they say they wont accept the figure you have offered, Its one of their tactics.. I bet when you found thay had tried to take more than the amout, they said it was a Mistake ??

I wouldnt pay them by DD, set up a standing order ( they wont agree at 1st , but persist & they will )

I strongly urge you to contact..http://www.nationaldebtline.co.uk/.. for some free advice
