Moorcroft

Hi there

I'm a newbie here but I'm wondering if some of you wise types will be able to give me some advice.

When I was a student (2001), I lived in a shared flat. After graduating I moved around a bit - 4 different flats/houses, but about a month ago I received a letter from late 2001 (with PLEASE FORWARD written on envelope) from Moorcroft Debt Recovery Ltd - saying I owed them £40.90 as a debt from BRITISH GAS TRADING had been passed on to them.

The gas bill must have been in my name for the student flat.

My question is - what should I do about this money. Should I pay Moorcroft. I mean, they know where I live - could this effect my credit rating?

I know it's only £40, which is nothing compared to the amounts seen in other threads but I would be grateful if any knowledgable person could give me some advice!

Thanks

BLAST

    Hiya and welcome

This debt is statute barred, if you have neither paid anything towards it or acknowledged it in writing in the last 6 years.

You do not need to pay it, just moorcroft hope you do not know the law.

The link for the letter you need to send is here (thanks fermi).

    From a previous thread:

    Quote:
A debt will be "Statute Barred" if there has been no acknowledgement of the debt by you making a payment or in writing within the relevant limitation period.

If you are in England/Wales then the limitation period is 6 years and you should read:

Link: Factsheet | Liability for Debts and the Limitation Act (England/Wales)

If you are in Scotland then the limitation period is 5 years and you should read:

Link: Factsheet | Liability for debts & the Prescription & Limitation (Scotland) Act 1973

If you feel the debt is "Statute Barred", then there is a letter to write at the end of each factsheet.

If you are unsure of anything, then give National Debtline a call free on 0808 808 4000 to talk your situation through with a professional advisor.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing
