Registration office

Hello all, my other half and i were talking about getting married next year but we cant decide on a venue.
I'm not the type of person who wants the big white church wedding although i would want to wear a dress but not the big merangue type i dont have the figure  .

here comes the stupid question :o

what happens in a registration office? can you dress-up (sorry if that sounds childish...im no good with words!) and invite a few people or is it just you, him and a few witnesses?
a friend on the internet i know got married a year ago and they went in normal clothes both in jeans and him a t-shirt and her a blouse!
i have never been to a ceremony in a registration office so would like to know if it really is that formal?

i have also looked for a venue in Burnley Lancashire but all i'm getting is a football club!!

can anybody help at all please?

  • Hi Crystal fire,

you can wear whatever you want to a register office, i organised a wedding for a couple who were into motorbikes so they wore their full leather bike outfits to get married in.
they also had about 30 friends and family attend then went to a local hotel for the reception and disco.

You will need to check with the register office how many people can attend, some can hold 10 people and others can holld over 50, or you can just have the couple and the witnesses.

you can also get married in many hotels now, just make sure they have the correct license.
    i hope this helps

    good luck

  • Have a look on your local authority website

If you click on approved premises you can see where you can get married http://www.pendle.gov.uk/site/scripts/documents_info.php?documentID=559

Im getting married in a registry office and Im having a big dress ! Hubby to be is going in a kilt, as is best man :)

You can have guests there, in our room, there is room for 34 people. You can get larger or smaller rooms, depending on how many guest you have.

Its your day, you have what you want :)

Check out local hotels/function suites for ideas of prices for a reception.

    Good luck with your planning

  • Civil weddings are really quite flexible, and the only rules are: (1) you can include nothing with religous reference, and (2) you need to provide two witnesses who are over 18 and are capable of understanding the ceremony. You can have just a basic caremony (which lasts about 10-15 minutes) or you can include music, poetry and readings to make it longer. You can wear what you like, and giving rings is optional. You just need to contact your local office to make an appointment to see the registrar, and bring along ID to give notice of marriage - you then complete a form giving your preferences for the ceremony and that is it. The number of guests you can have depends on the size of the amrriage rooms available.

Oh, and it is cheaper to do it in the register office than have a regitrar come out to somewhere else! :D
