 Now I really want to leave this horrible country! Nationalising housebuilders? Big Brother? And now the above............disgusting.

New Zealand here we come (if we can sell our house!) :rotfl:

New Zealand is a lovely country - but - make sure that you can afford good medical insurance as their version of the NHS is DIRE - I kid you not!

    Have lots of rellies there.
  • The publican - Government to bail out pubs

In fact, that's not such a bad idea! Although I'm not quite sure why it needs government money as opposed to advice.

"....grants of up to £20,000 are made available from local councils under the Sustainable Communities Act..."

Maybe it's part of a secret plan to place John Prescott in a more natural habitat than the House of Lords?

I could bail out pubs for a lot less then 20 grand, just let smokers back in.

  • The UK construction sector has been poorly managed for the past 20+ years and several major builders are now in serious danger of complete collapse. If that happens there will be ramifications for years to come. SOMETHING needs to be done. Perhaps not nationalisation, but certainly some sort of government intervention, such as a programme of building council houses, would not be amiss. Perhaps even renovation of present council housing stock to keep builders employed.

So what happens if the builders go bust? The land and unfinished houses get bought up cheaply and get put to profitable use. Investors in builders lose some money (investors are getting used to that at the moment).

The Government finds it hard enough to run a Government without trying to run building firms and banks too.

As the old saying has it, Don't just do something, stand there!

I have very little sympathy for an industry that has seen the selling price of its product double/triple in a relatively short period of time and then folds as soon as its not making a 30% margin.

the government owing builders does also open up the tax payer to a liability from anyone who buys the company's likely shoddily built flats.

How can you test a new build flat? Jump up and down until the walls cave in (or not)?
