  • i seem to recall prices on holiday in Spain, the year after Euro changeover, were noticeably higher then the year before- a lot of 'rounding up' went on?

that and the lack of control(!) the UK will have over its own affairs worries me.

    a lot.

Personally, yes If only to stop the debacle of the annual money change every holiday time. I think we have too much of an island mentality and it's time to realise that we are just a small island in a big world.

A very nice island though I hasten to add !

  • I would say no. The £ will recover and it will change as it always has done. When the Euro was weak i read that eurozome countries wanted to ditch it!

And i am sure places like Spain ect will be worries about the tourism.

The problem with Europe is it is not localised enough. If one country is really hit then the policy is focued towards the community. For example the BOE is flexible and changes to this country's needs.

Could you imagine the price increases as well. Look at other nations. They have all been morphed into one price wise. It is no wonder people are now travelling to countries outside the Eurozone.
  • I holiday in the Eurozone at least twice a year and I'd love it if we joined the Euro. I spend around 10% of my income in Euros and it is expensive converting Sterling to Euros.

The best time was some years ago but better late than never.

There are 10 types of people in this world. Those who understand binary and those that don't.
  • Our local paper here in Liverpool had a similar debate to this; which currency people would prefer, last year. The results were:
    37% - for the pound
    23% - for the euro
    3% - don't know
37%- prefer to keep the giro

  • Bernie - I think you should look at how much the £- Euro was when it was launched and see how strong the £ got against the Euro.

Perhaps then you will change your tune. And you would not have been £'s in after all.

The Euro will be the demise of Europe.

Think about this.... Our Economy overtook France in size, and nearly Germany. I wonder why?

Yes we will be cheaper to buy from which is a great thing. Output will increase, tourism will prosper and this will help us all. Who gives two sh*ts about having less money when you go to Spain or anywhere else? Simply don't go. Go to a nice cheap place.

  • I feel as though we lost our best chance at joining the Euro a couple of years ago when the rate was higher, but joining now rather than later/never is still the right thing to do. IMO the Euro will only get stronger in the next few years as more accession states join the Euro & more countries will trade in Euro's rather than the £. Why does Britain always insist in being the odd man out in Europe? Either join fully or pull out altogether.

Well, do you still feel the same after the last few weeks - I certainly don't!

The value of my house, pension, life-savings have now had about about 33% sliced off! Don't look now but Gordon has done the same to you too.

You're not worried about the falling pound, makes exports easier - Yeah! Right! You need to think this through a bit more. Unfortunately we in the UK are a NET IMPORTERS of stuff and boy! is that importation bill gonna rise - the price we pay in Sterling that is, the amount of stuff and the cost in Euros will be the same, we will just have to hand over a vastly greater number of Pounds Sterling for the same amount of stuff. Remember that negative trade gap thingy? We are going to see the prices rise sharply for our food, fuel, whatever else we need from outside the UK is going to become very expensive to us on the diminished value of our Sterling incomes.

The Ex-pats are in the frontline, feeling the effects of the demise of Sterling immediately, the rest of us have yet to feel the tsunami price hikes that are headed our way....

Gawd! I really do wish we'd gone into the Euro from the off...

The fall in the value of the £ is the same reason there was a fall in value of the $ last year and the same reason you will see a fall in the value of the euro next year falling interest rates it will all level off eventually.
