DFS sofas - worth it?

I am contemplating getting a new sofa from DFS, but I have never bought a sofa before, (we've always had hand-me-downs, or Freecycle sofas) so I'm quite nervous of spending such a lot on a piece of furniture.
Has anyone had a sofa from DFS for quite a while, and has it lasted well? Does it stay comfortable? I don't want to be paying for it still in a few years time and regretting ever buying it!
Thank you!

Hi, I know that some people don't like DFS but we bought our first sofa from them around 10 years ago and finally replaced it with 2 new ones this year. They cost around £1500 in total and are fabric rather than leather ones. I love them and I'm lying on one whilst typing this. My experiences with them have been positive ones, hope this helps.

It depends LOL. Some people I know have had very good experiences.

My ex bought one for £2.500 a few years ago, and it lasted him 3 years. It looked awful within a year of him getting it.

It was fabric, and cream, supposedly washable. When he got it, it was dry clean only covers, which cost a fortune to do. They refused to take it back. Him being him, didn't fight it *rolls eyes*, despite the fact that they advertised it wrongly. The back cushions slouched down and wouldn't stay put, the seats got all mishapen and lumpy, and it just looked a wreck. That said, it was HUGE, and very comfy to sleep on and sit on. It just didn't look anything apart from a mess.

We purchased a dfs suite about 10 years ago (leather ) and they charge extra for everything including the sofa feet...how can you have a usable sofa without feet lol!  Anyway the quality was rubbish and we opted to pay in 12 months rather than the 4 years they were offering ,so was I pleased we werent sill paying for it when it looked a mess IYSWIM. Our current sofa was saved up for and purchased for cash which was such a nice feeling and a bargain as well.
...so many stores wont be selling many so I bet there are some bargains to be had.
My recomendation would be to make do with what you have until you can afford to go and buy one direct from a furniture store rather than a huge chain like dfs. You will get better customer servic too:D

    * not pressuming that you cannot afford to buy a sofa but as this is o/s ..so is my advice;) :rotfl: hth

Oh actually, I should add, we have a DFS sofa. We had a nosey inside it, and it's cheap wood and foam inside. Nothing spectacular, and certainly not worth what you pay for it, though ours is holding up well. Next time, I will be buying from a smaller shop.

We bought ours in DFS and it still looks good as new 4 years on, well it would if the cat hadn't stropped her claws on the arm
Anyway, we are very happy with ours but it doesn't get constant use so cannot testify to how hardwearing it would be for a family using it every day.
  • The first sofa we bought from them was faulty. What a struggle to get money back! Never again. In the end - to cut a long story short - we got a cheaper sofa from them in exchange (plus money difference back) and its been really good. However, because of our terrible experience with trying to get first one sorted I swear I shant buy from them again.
  • I am currently sitting on a 10yr old dfs sofa which still looks as good as new. In its long life, it has moved house 4 times, spent a year in a house we rented out and has been sat on every day. Over the last yr the corner cushions on both sofas have become a bit to soft as you sit down on them. I dont think is too bad considering what they have lived through, Its a fabric sofa with a cushion back.

I would definitely buy one again, I would only say be careful on the style/pattern you buy as you might be living with it for a long time.

  • Hi there  I did a Forum search and there are several DFS threads spread over the boards. You might want to have a go yourself; there are a few on the Customer Vent Board

As this isn't really and Old Style query, I'm going to move it to the I Wanna board, for more responses :D

  • My sofas are under 5 years old and terrible. The colour faded and the stiching came undone. But the wouldnt change them they sent out the repairers but they really didnt do much. as they said they couldnt really fix the problem. and that was when they were under a year old.
    Never ever again

DFS advertise sofa from under £300 , so yes it will be cheap foam and thin wood frame . You get what you pay for. But if a style you like last for a few years
