DVD Player won't play

I have a Samsung DVD/Video player which is 16 months old, so out of warranty. It will not play DVD's anymore - even brand new ones - makes a trememdous whirring sound trying to load and then a message comes up "this disc cannot be played."

Are there any bits in a DVD player that need cleaning? Or, is it just a crappy player that has packed up?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Samsung tend to be of a pretty good build quality
Have you tried a cleaning disc?
If not thats my first suggestion

    Otherwise your options are ~
    New one
get it fixed (probably not worth it - I assume it was fairly cheap)
Take the casing off and give the mechanics a bit of a clean yourself (be VERY careful of the laser should it be switched on, it WILL destroy your retina if your eye is directly above it) ~ only have a go if you feel your upto it. Ive fixed a few dvd players this way (by feeding it a disc and cleaning dust/fluff etc from the mechanisms)

Thanks for the information - must admit I had never heard of a cleaning disc or the need to clean the laser (shows how much I know about technology), but will definitely get one to try. Any recommendations? or are they all basically the same?

It cleans the lense that the laser comes out of. Theyre all basically the same, though I do recommend an IXOS one
They have small brushes underneath to gently clean the lense. HOWEVER, im guessing that its the actual mechanics that are at fault (probably a bit of dirt somewhere)
