National Insurance Mix Up

in Cutting tax
I was checking back on my P60s from last year and because I had two jobs, one of which was taxed at basic rate, I thought I may be due a rebate. I called my tax office to check with them and ask them how I should go about it. They asked for my NI number and name etc but could not confirm my details. Turns out that my NI number has been assigned to my brother. They could not get access to my account because the name and DOB were different. I asked my brother to call up and it turns out he has two NI numbers registered with HMRC and 3 different DOBs. I called the NI helpline and they confirmed the details were right and that I have been using the right NI number and paying contributions into my account. They could not explain why this has happened and are looking into it. I'm a bit concerned as to how this could have happened and what are the consequences? Will it make it more difficult for me to get a tax rebate as if I send in my P60, it won't match up with the details they have for me.

you need to take your NI number, 2 forms of ID (one with photo) and you brother with his ID and you both need to go to your local tax office and they should be able to sort this out. if the details the national insurance contributions office hold are correct, the tax ofice should have no problem changing them, but need to see proof of who you are! if you call them and explain the situation and tell them you have rang NICO, they may even be able to request the info from them (although i doubt it as you are allowed to give a requested name for use with NI, even if its not your birth name or been changed by deed poll, however your real name would still be present on records)the only debt left now is on credit cards! The evil loan has gone!! :j:j0
