A bit of sewing advice / opinions please?

I bought a long grey wool coat from a charity shop last year - it is a BHS one and looks brand new, so bargain for £5!...but the sleeves are too short for me.

I've bought a piece of grey fur fabric to use to lengthen the sleeves, like making furry cuffs, and hopefully there will be enough to cover thecollar so it will look like it was designed that way (that's my theory anyway!).

What I am stuck on - and it is a very silly question I know - should the fur pile be 'up' or 'down'? - What I mean is, should I make it so that it lies smooth when brushed towards my hand, or stands up, IYSWIM?

Even if there isn't a 'right' or 'wrong' way - which do you think would look better?

Thanks for your advice,

FE

I would do it so that the pile is down towards your hands.

Yep pile down towards your hands but when you cut the fur fabric, try to keep your sissors at a slight angle so that you only cut through the supporting fabric leaving some of "fur" covering the cut. Hope that makes sense. That way, when you sew on the cuffs, the fur will cover up the seam and it won't look like a bare patch. Hope this helps

I was typing an answer to include the same advice, but abandoned it as my courage failed me :o

Seeing rockie4's answer made me realise a better way of what I was trying to put. I cannot see a collar with the pile brushing up towards your head being right, so agree that the fur should brush down in each case, away from neck, and towards hands.
