Help with DCA

This is actually help for my mum, but im not sure of the awnser and thought asking here would be the best thing.
My Mum and Step-dad were together for 20 years, however he left her last december and moved in with someone else. When he left they split the debts 50 50 ish, and he took the debts on thier assets - they had a Car and Campervan both on credit, he took both of those too.
Now my Mum is recieving letters from a DCA regarding one of the loans that my Step-Dad took (its in joint names). She has spoken to the DCA who have bought the debt from a liquidated company (the original loan company) and have no paperwork as yet about the loan, and neither does my Mum, as she gave it all to my SD.
My Mum seems to think that the outstanding on the loan may have been about 4K, but the company are asking for 7k.
My Mum has worked hard to apy off all the debt she was left with, and is trying to rebuild her credit file, so she is talking about paying it, but I dont believe she should have to, as while its in joint names, my SD verbally agreed to take it on. Is there a standard letter she can send to stall the DCA while she tries to contact my SD, who has since moved and she is struggling toget hold of him as she has no phone number (she knows his address and email address).
Sorry its so long winded, and advice would be really appreciated.

Do you know when the last payment made towards the debt was?
It may be worthwhile requesting a copy of the credit agreement (CCA) - if they don't have that then the debt may be unenforcable. She would need to keep SD advised of what she is doing though so he doesn't make the debt enforcable somehow. After falling off the gambling wagon (twice): £33,600 (24,000+ 9,600) - Original CC Debt: £7,885.91
Dad Gift 6k ¦ Savings & Inv Tst: £2,500
Loan 10k: £0 ¦ Dad 5.5k: £2,270 ¦ LTSB: £0 ¦ RBS: £0 ¦ Virgin £0 ¦ Egg £0
Total Owed: £2,270 (+6k) 11/08/20110 -
Thanks very much, I will get her to send a CCA request letter. I know she just wants to stall them until she can speak to my SD - they have two children together but he doesnt seem to care very much anymore
