Hi,
I think Mrs Beeton books are fantastic. They teach a basic art and then build from there. I personally have the old 1960's version and the newer version which is available from Amazon for just over £11

The book has well over 1000 pages and covers all aspects of cookery. Some books are poor in some areas - this book covers all areas in a methodical manner. Its updated as well so it tackles modern cookery methods and situations. I work in catering and use the book as a reference. Well worth the money, its invaluable.0 -
How old is your daughter?
I have got a couple I use on a regular basis (kids books) but they are brilliant. I use the Usborne Beginner's Cookbook and a flip book called Kids Can Cook. My mum also bought me a book called How To Boil An Egg by J Arkless. It is a simple cookery book for one.

I have just bought the Good Housekeeping one and it is excellent.
I cannot recommend it highly enough. It tells you how to do all the basic skills like kneading, rubbing in, folding, making pastry from scratch and pasta from scratch and each recipe is really simple to follow. Here's a link for Amazon

That is why I suggested the kids books as it takes you right back to basics. I am 40 and they are the ones that I use for my cooking on a regular basis.0

I like Jocasta Innes "The Pauper's Cookbook" as it uses basic ingredients and stretches meals out so a chicken can make three different meals."This site is addictive!"
