Setting up my own tax returns business: advice needed

  • I used to work for HMRC in the days when it was the Inland Revenue. Assuming the rules are the same, your girlfriend will HAVE to resign if she wants to run a tax return service. Its that simple.

Also, what is your girlfriends experience with HMRC? How long has she worked there? What areas of tax has she dealt with? I'm not convinced that she will have the necesary skills to provide a full and accurate service.

I admire anyone can start & run & sell a successful business.

Experts who post on here regularly such as jimmo & Pennywise are have taken many years to beome experts. This means that they can instinctively spot areas outside of their own "comfort zones" & seek appropriate help.

You may find that you commit errors of commission - not just omission, due to such lack of experience.

Completing tax returns implies advising on choosing accounting dates, changes of year-end, tax credits, pensions, cross-border matters, VAT, transfer pricing, inheritance tax, CGT planning and numerous other matters. Are you going to notice all of these? If you fail to observe something you could be sued; this a complex profession to enter ...

I hate to be picky but see that Clapton picked you up previously for spelling mistakes and now you have said that your girlfriend works for the Inland Revenue. The people on this board who may be able to help you all know that the Inland Revenue ceased to exist a few years ago. It is now HMRC.

You are quite right, but I have just had a phone call from a chap at the 'Inland Revenue', so I corrected him, I think you are actually calling from Revenue & Customs or HMRC.

They don't even know themselves :rotfl:

There is strong evidence of fraudsters claiming to be from HMRC (but who are just crooks not hard working civil servants at all) cold calling to get personal information so I hope you gave none?

It was a phone call to work, so not personal, but thanks for the tip.

In the Inland Revenue I went through the grades and became an Inspector of Taxes.
    FT or NFT?

If you know the difference then a little bit of research into my posts on this forum will provide you with the obvious answer,
Am I becoming paranoid, or are you picking on me?
Only curious, but if you'd rather not say...
