HMRC late processing of Self Assessment form

My self assessment was recieved by HMRC on 8th August. Not 2 weeks afterwards, I received a notice for late payment on my account. This notice stated that I would be charged interest on the value oustanding. This, however is not my question as I have resolved this direct with HMRC.
The problem is that I was previously self employed, but am now PAYE. My self assessment basically worked out that HMRC are due to rebate me, to the tune of nearly £4K - no small amount.
It is now 16th October and my return has still not been processed. I have spoken to HMRC who inform me there is a back log and my return probably wont get processed for another couple of months.
Is there anything I can do to get this money back quicker? Can I potentially claim for interest on what they owe me?
