thames credit/ aktiv kapital

can anyone give me advice on this company? i have got letters off them saying i owe £800 from way back 1995-2000, they said they have put a mark on my credit file and will keep it there till i pay, the debt is 'meant' to be from a sofa company, i did buy a sofa back then but paid in full and even rang the sofa company to confirm this, the guy i spoke to from thames mentioned a store card belonging to the same company, i have never in my life had a store card,, Today i got another letter the lady i spoke to when i rang back said i should go to the police and get a crime number, as if i am saying i don't owe it i must be saying someone has committed a fraud crime against me,, i'm not sure what to do at all, thought about a solicitor?

    Hi

This debt is probably statute barred, so you do not need to pay it.

If you have paid nothing towards it in the last 6 years, unless there is a CCCJ, this is idle threats.

Might also be worth having a look at your credit file (free at experian if you can cel within 30 days) - jsut to see if there is anything on there that shouldn't be and to see what this "mark" they have put on your file is.
