Debt demand sent to wrong address

I have received a demand from a debt collection agency to someone at my address that I have never heard of before. The demand is for HP on a car in the sum of £6K.

I have lived at the address for 20 years. When I rang the debt collection agency they said their tracing agency must have made a mistake and they said that they would look into it with them. I am worried that this may have an impact on my excellent credit score, particularly because I am a regular stoozer.

The debt collection agency have told me not to worry about it, but I am concerned that my address has ended up on their files and even though they have a note I dont have any connection with this person, apparently my address cannot be deleted from their system.

Can your address be blacklisted by the credit reference agencies? Is there any link between the credit reference agencies and tracing agencies? As I have said I am a regular stoozer so I get a copy of my files from Experian, Equifax etc once a year - the last reports were all in order.

Has anyone else come across problems similar to this with tracing agencies/debt collection companies. Should I be concerned and if so any advice that anyone has would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Credit records used to be done by address, and there were all sorts of horror stories about people being refused credit because of people who lived there before them, or their kids, or lodgers, etc. Nowadays credit records are indexed by name and address. It should not harm you.
