An Ipod is an MP3 player. The Apple Ipod has the branding though!
Creative also do a nice range of MP3 players called Zen, similar spec, actually better in some respects - but without the cool branding.

Main differences between the players are the storage capacities and their physical size. The new Ipod is the size of a wallet, my old Creative Jukebox 3(now obsolete) is bigger than a portable CD Player.

If it fits in his pocket and has at least 20GB storage, he'll be happy! If its an Ipod he'll be cool in school too :)

USB will do if the MP3 player uses a usb connection. Firewire is quicker bit not all MP3 players use firewire. A firewire card is pretty cheap these days.
