Welcome to the world of work!

I know this is harsh but if the job is sh*t - move on! No point wasting time worrying about all the injustices while they are making money from you. I was stuck in a job for a while and it made me utterly miserable. It is my biggest regret that I stayed as long as I did. You can always get a better job and you will, it just takes a little time. Give yourself a goal..maybe wait until the Christmas period is over and then say "i'm outta there!" Have you thought about signing up to an employment agency? Often big promotions come out of the little jobs you take to get by....

You can do it! Don't be a victim! View it as an opportunity!

THere's nowt you can do except find another job, honey.

Where I work, we don't get a lunch break (illegal), I haven't been paid my expenses since August, some people are owed £8,000 in expenses and overtime, the bosses can't handle money and the firm is going down the tubes - we've been threatened with redundancies in January.

No point reporting them, just look for something else.

    Hi Beckyboo,

With all due respect to Annie Fanny and Skintchick, who've had horrible experiences of their own to make them wary of reporting the company, but I think you should at least seek advice on what can be done about your employers. Have a look at http://www.acas.org.uk/ or telephone them on their helpline 08457 47 47 47 to discuss the situation in your workplace. Your call will be confidential and will at least give you some information on what could be done.

The reason that some employers continue in this day and age to flaunt employment law is because people do just leave rather than challenge them. By all means do look for another job where you will be happy and properly rewarded for your work, but please do consider taking some action against this company, if not for your own sake, but for those who will continue to be employed by them or will be in the future.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do :rudolf:

  • I agree with Fleago.

Contact ACAS or even CAB. Dig out your contract of employment - if you have one. There are a multitude of laws that cover employees, everything from the Equal Pay Act to Health & Safety.

You need to identify specific problems and get professional advice as to what, if any, laws are being broken.

If you are in a trade union - start with them. If not - do you have legal insurance included in your house insurance? This might cover employment problems.

If your work situation is intolerable, start keeping an honest diary. Take legal advice FIRST on what breaches of laws there may be (ACAS is an excellent starting point) - then you may be able to quit and sue for constructive dismissal.
