On HMRC list... how likely is it I'll get offered a job?

I just got an email from Revenue and Customs saying that after my recent interview (a month ago I think it was ) I have been 'recommended for appointment' for an AA position, but cannot be offered an immediate position. I'm really pleased (yay!
) as I've been searching for a job for quite some time, and now my temporary summer job has finished I'm getting quite desperate so I can finally have enough money to move out and rent a room somewhere (financially I'm technically okay at the moment working part time as I live with my parents, but I desperately need to get out of there as since I am 18 and have to share a bedroom with my 2 younger sisters and younger brother, overcrowding is a real issue!)
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had been in my position (there must be some current or ex-HMRC workers here since they employ so many people!) and if you have any idea, obviously at a vague guess, how often new posts are likely to come up? Is there a high staff turnover? The email said that jobs should start to be available from 1/12/08, but I don't know if that'll be a case of one job will come up and another won't for a few months or if there are new posts frequently available. It also said that if I don't hear anything for 6 months I haven't been successful in getting anything so I'm not guaranteed a job with them at all.
I don't really know what to do at the moment... I suppose my options are:
a) Try to get some temp jobs until I hopefully get a post with HMRC, though obviously there is a risk I won't be able to get many jobs, especially at this time when so many people are newly out of work and having to temp, and I might end up not getting a job with them at all and having to go through this whole job search process again. I really would like to get a job with them as I liked the place and it just felt right.
b) Keep on applying for other jobs as I have been and take something else if I'm lucky enough to get anything- but it takes so much time applying for things and it's quite demotivating, especially as so many places turn me down for not having enough experience- I know that might sound silly, but I'm getting quite stressed now and I HATE my PT waitressing job etc etc ... also, like I said, the HMRC job felt right so if there's a good chance I'll get it eventually I'd like to wait and take it.
Basically, what I do will probably depend on how likely people think it is that I will be offered at job at some point! Has anyone here ever been on the list and not made it after the six months or is it unlikely that that will happen? Sorry for the long rambling post!
Thanks in advance for any help guys :T

Have you been put on the reserve list? If so I was when I applied and was given a job the next time they took on people (about 3 weeks after I got the letter telling me I was on the list). They give you about 4 weeks notice that you have the job and send you a pack with the Revenue booklet in (well at least they did it may have changed in the past 5 years).
Where abouts are you in the UK, could you not apply for an AO position in a contact centre?
HMRC have a very high turnover of staff, especially in the contact centres so it should not be long before you get an offer.[SIZE=-1]To equate judgement and wisdom with occupation is at best . . . insulting.

they usually take on staff in big groups (usually about 12 at a time)
and i agree with the above, why not apply for an AO position?? the money is £15232pa... a lot higher than an AA wage...the only debt left now is on credit cards! The evil loan has gone!! :j:j0 -
I'd sign on with some agencies and see if you can get some short-term contracts, even a week at a time. That way if HMRC doesn't come good, you've got a) some money and b) a proven work record, both of which will be useful whatever happens!Signature removed for peace of mind0

Hi there
I have just received an email with an invitation to the interview for CA (Clerk Assistant) post.
Would you please give me any tips how to prepare for it? They only write they are going to check:
-working in a team
-focussing on the customer
I would be really grateful for any sugestions:-)0 -
well on my interview they ask you about your experince and make sure you no what the company does before u go there becasue the first question they will ask you is what do you no about us and what we do. Also make sure you no what u have applied for as they may ask you a question on your application. However the most importnat questions are asked towards the end and are based on your experince. onbe question i got asked was:
give an example of when you dealt with a impatient customer and things got out of hand and explain what you did to sort things out?
Make sure you dress up smart before you go hope it goes well all the bes!!!!!!
P.S are u applying in leicester0 -
I was an AA at HMRC this time last year and I loved it, I was on Routine Group dealing with Tax Returns. I really really enjoyed it. The only thing was I was an FTA but it gave me a kick up the bum and I became an AO with CSA just before my contract ended (I think it helps to get these positions when you have already worked in a gov dept).
I was only there 4 months and I'm now an EO at Jobcentreplus. This time last year I never believed I would be in such a position, having been unemployed for 6 weeks before HMRC (which was depressing enough, can't imagine what people go through on longer stints!)
Anyway, what I'm trying to say is good luck, and with a bit of determination and hard work you can succeed in whatever you want to do!! xxHanny:easter_ba0 -
