Right time to buy a Nikon D700 or not?

Hi all,
Well for the past week I've been looking at the d700 (with my jaw firmly hitting the table in most circumstances).
I have come to the conclusion that I simply MUST HAVE this camera!
There are only 2 questions running through my head right now that I wanted to ask you guys here at MSE...
1) Where is the cheapest place to get one of these at the moment? My research has lead me to believe that calumet photo is the cheapest as I get 20% discount there as a student, (10% from the shop, and a further 20% from nikon). At £1649, it's competetive already but with 20% off that brings it down to £1330 ish region (excuse my on the fly maths if its wrong).
2) What is the chance if this camera coming down in price for christmas? I don't really want to wait till then to find it's only dropped a hundreed £££'s, as the use of the camera for 2 months would have made me earn more than that. (I do photography jobs now and again in between my studies for photography).
Thanks for reading and hope u can help me make up my mind!
Colin.

When is there a right time to buy a Nikon?

There are some new models coming out soon 'apparently', so I would be tempted to wait a few months (if you can!), and you should save a wedge by buying the technically older model...

Oh no! Please don't let this turn into a canon vs nikon thread... i couldn't possibly undergo another one, I just read through one on another forum, it went on for 20 pages or so!!!
Are you talking of the D3X? It's only due to be released in Feb-March...0 -
According to a Nikon/Canon rumours website, both are releasing new models in Oct/Nov. That is only rumours of course, but they usually come from within and fairly accurate.
Yes, I am a Canon man, but I wont bore you

More here, but google 'Nikon rumours', there's plenty...:A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things. That i'm sure will most diffenately be talking of the Nikon D3x, which we all knew was going to be the next to follow, however it's in a league of it's own and I really don't think it will affect the price of the d700.
But thats jsut my personal view, what are others?0 -
If I could afford to change my D200 to a D700 and got a discount like the ones your quoting I would be already queuing outside Calumet instead of sitting here responding. I've been playing around with the D700 in a few stores and it is the mutts nuts and at your price makes it a no brainer.
hmm. Interesting about the 20% student discount I think my 4 year old needs a new SLR body.0 -
Student discount?
I didn't know Calumet did a student discount. Can't find anything on their site. Is it just on Nikons? I am drooling over a Canon that I really can't afford. A 10% discount would help...0 -
Wait wat and wait some more.
It in a niche position at the moment with no competition.
Sony has one soon.
Wait and I expect when the competition arrives the prices will tumble. There will be cash back promotions etc etc.
Whilst there is no competition it is the sellers' market.0 -
This thread mirrors exactly how I am feeling about getting the d700. I simply must have, but also a student and money is tight. I phoned calumet to confirm but apparently their discount is only available on their own brand products, and bowens. Also they do 6 months 0% interest free credit for...wait for it...everone but students, yip the ones who really need it. Typical. The best price I have seen is for new on ebay from digital rev for £1,548, but no pay it up option. I would love to hear if anyone could better that especially with a pay it up option.0
