I just bought a similarly spec'd IBM R50e from Staples for £399 for FILs Christmas (from MIL; I'm not that generous;)). It's a pretty impressive machine for the money. The IBM seems better in a couple of respects; it has a DVD burner, 3.5 hours battery life (not sure about the Dell but other 4 cells I've seen struggle to do much over an hour) and the IBM has integrated WiFi (maybe the Dell does, you don't state). Even if everything was equal, I'd buy an IBM over a Dell and I'd buy from a shop rather than the web as it's easier to return if problems arise.
EDIT: The IBM also has a 15" screen which is bigger than the Dell. See this thread for more details. There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.
It's for the many and not the few. Be sure it's out there looking for you.

I am also debating over the IBM R50 and the dell basic laptop, as both are decent makes. Mine is for my sister at Uni, for basic essay writing and internet access.
Whilst the IBM has got a better spec, they are damned ugly! and I am wondering whether my sis would be more interested in looks than spec?
any thoughts anyone? as I have to pick one up for Xmas0 -

PC world have a very similar spec advent laptop for £349 ( very slightly slower M350 processor , but otherwise near identical to the dell)
Its been featured on TV adverts , so will fly out of the stores. It still shows as available to reserve ( collect at store) on their website.
You can get a free vodaphone 3G pay-as-u-use mobile connect data card too. These are usually pretty expensive. I should imagine that the internet is quite fast connecting with one of these as they are 3G ( assuming you can find anywhere with a Voda 3G signal).0 -
Thanks, I will go to PC world!0
