Hi,Has anybody used an ultra sonic contact lens cleaner? Was it any good?

I bought one of the teardrop shaped devices off eBay for about £25. It's model CD-2900.

My hope was that it would remove deposits from my silicon hydrogel soft contact lens more thoroughly than even the most highly regarded solutions, daily cleaners and protein removers.

I currently use Opti-Free Replenish solution, Mira-Flow daily cleaner and various protein removal tablets. The solution and daily cleaner work fine on my 'one month' disposable lens and enable me to wear them for about 3 months but, all of a sudden, at about the 3 month point, they aren't as comfortable and no amount of rubbing with daily cleaner will improve matters. I've never found a protein removal tablet that seems to do anything much at all. I find these tablets a complete waste of money.

So I bought one of the ultrasonic contact lens cleaners to see if it could get me through the 3 month barrier as a money saving measure. Bingo! It works. It must remove deposits which the chemicals will not budge. I will keep my ultrasonic unit for occasional use, every few months, whereas some people use them instead of chemicals on a daily basis. Hopefully, the electronic unit will last longer by only using it every few months.

Before cleaning with ultrasonic, I can just about see the ingrained deposits which must be causing discomfort. After 2 minutes of ultrasonic cleaning, the deposits appear to have gone and this fits with what I can feel. Rather than clean the lens for 2 minutes in one go (as recommended in the instructions), I use 8 sessions of 15 secs, with at least 10 mins in between each session. Or half an hour gaps - whenever I next walk past the cleaner. This is to help minimise the heat build up in the lens, as a result of the ultrasound action. I'm concerned that heat build up might damage the lens. Someone else on the Internet reckons there is a heater in the cleaner. It only gets slighlty warm after 2 minutes but I want to avoid even that, and I think it's caused by ultrasonic vibration, rather than by any in-built heater. Either way I don't want to risk any heat.
  • I have tried one & from experience I wouldn't recommend them.

I now wear dailies. This way chemical cleaners ect are avoided and only saline needs to be used. It is an expensive way to go, but I want to avoid problems and I want to keep wearing lenses for as long as possible.
