company car - what are the rules

I have been offered a company car - but would like to use my own car for travel to and from work and also for company business. I would like my husband to have permanent use of the company car i.e. the car will not be used for my work.

However, can I still have my company car insurance, breakdown and car tax paid for by the company?

I would like to know the legalities of this and what I can and cant do before I broach this to my employer?

I would ask your employer what are their company rules on cars first, then sort out what you / husband are driving and when.

I also 'think' you will be taxed on the car, but I am sure others will be along with other information for you.

You need to look at the company's own rules of the company car scheme.

Many say that the car is provided for 'the better performance of your duties' or something along those lines, and may contain provisions or restrictions about who else can drive the car and what it may be used for.

Other schemes will allow what you are suggesting.

Even if your company gives you the go ahead to do this you will still be taxed as having a company car. The legislation states that if a car "is made available for private use" then a car benefit charge arises. Your employer has made it available for your private use and personally if I was going to pay more tax because of it then I would use it.
