Holiday in the Lake District

I am thinking of having a walking short break (3-4 days) in the Lake District in the New Year. Can anyone advise if it is best to take a car over with me to allow access to various parts of Cumbria or should I fly over (probably to Newcastle) and use public tranport to get around to different locations.
Does anyone know of an approved route to allow me to get a real feel for the area in 3-4 days? Can anyone recommend good b&bs for along the route?
Any advice greatly appreciated.

I would imagine the boat and a bike would be the ideal form of transport if you want to go for a 'walking short break'. It would certainly be a lot cheaper than taking the car over. The ferry prices are high!
You may get good info if you put this on the England section;)0 -
Stena Line - Larne to Fleetwood
cycle to POULTON-LE-FYLD and take the rail up to the lake district through Lancaster.0
