I cook huss as it only has the thick cartilage in the centre which is easily removed when preparing (rather than fiddly bones) and cut into small fingers to make HM fish fingers. I just coat in flour and batter - I get my niece and nephew to help usually!
Then I just drop in the fryer until golden brown. They love them!
Otherwise - fish pie gets my vote! Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

A favourite in my house is mackarel pizza. Cut a baguette in half lenghtways into whatever size pieces you want. Spread tomato ketchup (or puree) on bread and sprinkle on a few herbs. Mash up a tin (or two) of mackarel fillets in tomato sauce (or if you are my niece then a tin of tuna instead) and spread out over bread. Top with cheese and pop in warm oven until cheese nice and golden and the whole thing is warmed through.
Very similar to our family favourite "Fishy Toast" - quick lunch/snack that I loved as a child and my DD loved when little.
Make toast, mash up a can of 'mackerel in tomato sauce' and make fishy toast sandwich yum yum !
DD still raids the cupboard and makes this for herself and she's 18 now:rotfl:0 -
Thanks all for your advice. I might brave a (smelly) dish now...0

Don't knock those frozen blocks of white fish - they are still fish, and can be good VFM as well.
If you like curry, I can also do you a mild fish curry with coconut milk - a kind of "fish korma"
In the meantime, try this little snack or starter; I reckon it's easy enough for the kids to do themselves, with a bit of supervision. It's like pilchards or mackerel on toast, but a lot more sophisticated.

Cut 4 slices of the French bread on the slant. Lightly toast them. Spread the fish paste on one side.
Put them on a baking tray and cook in the oven for 5 minutes.
ADDITIONS & ALTERNATIVES

Fish cakes, make them firm enough and you can make them into shapes with a pastry cutter before putting crumbs on.
I coat the base with egg, then add the breadcrums, the moment I place it on to to do the other side, the breadcrumbs just go everywhere!!!
The other issues I have, even though I coat the dish with 1 Cal, before placing the bugers on, they still stick to the dish (I oven cook them)
Any suggestions please, as I've given up making them.Click here for Martins (MSE) advice on who to contact with Debt Issues - YOU HAVE NO REASON TO USE A FEE PAYING DEBT MANAGEMENT COMPANY- THEY CANNOT DO ANYMORE FOR YOU THAN THOSE LISTED IN MY LINK ABOVE.

My son loves baked salmon AKA Pink fish
I just bake the whole thing on a really low heat in the oven wrapped in foil with some lemon and tyme, then everyone takes what they want off at the table."On behalf of teachers, I'd like to dedicate this award to Michael Gove and I mean dedicate in the Anglo Saxon sense which means insert roughly into the anus of." I've just bought this book
and I've made her crustless salmon pizza for tea tonight. What a success!
Easy peasy
Take a salmon fillet per person and slice it horizontally-you can get 2 or 3 slices depending on thickness of the fillet.
Arrange slices on a lined (I used reusable liner) baking tray to form a circle like a pizza base.
Top with mushrooms, peppers or other veg -I used some asparagus spears.
Pour tomato sauce over (chopped onion, garlic, carton of passata simmered for 20-30mins with a splash of balsamic vineger)
Finish with mozzarella. Fay suggests a ball of cheese but I used grated. I'm glad I did because the finished pizza was quite wet.
Bake for 25 mins at 220 (200 fan).
Serve with a green salad.
A big hit with my kids. My eldest son had seconds and he NEVER has seconds of fish ever.
Fay suggest garlic bread as an accompaniment but I forgot this and we found we were full enough with just the pizza.
I'm looking forward to trying out more recipes from this book. I don't really go in for celebrity cookbooks but I was pleasantly surprised by Fay Ripley.0 -
Hi there
I recently tried River Cobbler you can get it smoked or normal and is just like haddock it flakes. It was very cheap and actually down as Mr T's value range. Cooked the smoked one in milk. The other with just a nob of butter some lemon juice and a few slices of lemon over the top then in the microwave for a few mins. So easy and tasty.
Hope that helps xxAlthough I get lonely  as a single mother there are always two smiling angels ready to give me the biggest hug in the world. Love you babies :grouphug:
