Sneaky Healthy Eating - any tricks to share?

I recently had a brainwave, which was all those horrible crumby bits at the bottom of the Branflakes packet, well I saved them in a tupperware container and when we make rice krispy cakes, i add a load to the mix. It gives them an extra crunch and its healthy too. No-one else knows they're there though......

I also put courgette in the food processor and then add to spag bol for some extra veg.

anyone else have anything like this that they do?

I do a large pan of roast veg every week and eat some with a meal, but the rest gets wizzed up and goes into pizza sauce, pasta sauce, shepherds pie etc. My son loves it, but hates the Aubergines, Courgettes and onions seperately, so its a great way to get different veg down him. Also, once its cooked, you only need to warm it back up with a tin of tomato's etc so you cut down on oven cooking time too.

I always keep some celery in 'stock'.

Why, becasue if we are making lots of things u end up with lots of useless veggie ends. Add some celery to them to make stock!

Saying that, it all usually ends up as french onion soup anyways!
  • Healthy snacks, in my opinion, should satisfy the following criteria:

    1. They must be filling.
    2. They must be of benefit to the body

With this in mind I would say no-no to all the breakfast bars/biscuits/crisps/cakes as they are purely unrefined sugars, ie fast digestion. The exception being fruit of course but stick to apples and bananas (make sure they are yellow not brown, yellow contains more starch which breaks down slower than the brown which contains more sugar) If you want a snack I suggest you stick to more protein and fat based substances. Protein and fat have a more "thermogenic" effect ie they take more effort for the body to digest and they also are more filling.

Some examples of snacks I like:

    -cottage cheese with some cinnamon
-sardines with a bit of lettuce/frozen veg
    -apples (maybe two)
    - a cup of tea with 50:50 semi skimmed milk (the milk fills you up)
    Buy for value not cost.

This isn't really 'hiding' veggies. But when I was little (about 3) I hated potatoes. The only way I'd eat mash would be when you're mashing it and comes through the masher (technical terms here) and they're like floppy chips. :rotfl:
  • This is my standard way of getting extra veg in the kids ;) I never make a curry, soup, stew, casserole, pizza/pasta sauce witout it now. The freezer is full of little tubs marked Veg Hash.
