- Yes exactly. Don't look too often under the lid else the heat dissapears. Once an hour or two is enough. Things happen slowly in the SC dependent on the wattage eg 100 or 200 watts. Try it with a pair of forks rippping it apart. It wil be tough, tough, tough, tough, softer, soft, even softer , falling apart <-- this is the point when it shreds between forks and is done. A nice piece of meat.0 -

I put it in about 8 pm and leave it overnight.
I add water to the bottom of the pot first with 2 Oxo cubes crumbled in.
Take it out the next morning and add more hot water/stock.
I then thicken it with Bisto granules and slice some meat and pop it back in.
Serve at lunchtime with veg.

what make of slow cooker do you all have - I got an Anthony Worrall Thompson one - I was really disappointed - stew in for 9 hours and still not cooked - I did exactly as the recipe said and tried a couple of times but didnt have one success. I took it back to the shop in the end. I know lots of people rave about them but as I said I was really disappointed with the one I got. I am tempted to buy another one but would hate the same thing to happen...0

Mines a Swan , its ancient haha ...
my mum got it as a wedding presant, and i stole it when i first moved out of home 15 years ago... still in its box because she didn't know how to use it.
I love it, use it all the time ... id be hopelessly lost if it ever broke, i make at least 1 stew and 2 soups in it EVERYWEEK...
My mum came to visit not to long ago and was shocked i still had it and used it she just figured it would be binned/broken or still sitting in it's box somewhere.0 -
Mine's a Swan too.
I've also got a curry cooker, which is a little bit faster, made by Kenwood.
They're both good. Borrow one, Bagby, and see if you can get on with it. I've just lent a friend the curry cooker and she's a convert.0 -

Wow thanks!
I have the feeling i'm going to come to love my slow cooker :rotfl:
Any recommendations on where to get some good basic recipes for a beginner?
Also - the rice pudding sounds like a great idea, would I make this in the slow cooker the same way as when I have made it in the oven?
Thanks for all your advice/tips so far :jLearning valuable lessons everyday - made all the easier by the folks on here and my amazing family :T

I have just bought a tesco slow cooker SC356.
The User guide says:
LOW: Can also be used for heating up cooked food
HIGH: The normal slow-cooking setting. Cooking time is around 7-8 hours
Warm: keeps recently cooked foods warm
I have noticed people have said cook the joint on LOW setting for 8 hours, so I am a little confused as I'm not sure if my High is someone else's low if you see what i mean..? thanks, in advance for any advice on this.
PS Guide says mains power 174-207 watts (if this helps!)0
