Ryanair Chief Executive Michael O'Leary, who told him that in the past two weeks about 250,000 people have booked free flights with Ryanair. He said that to get a free flight you have to pay with Visa Electron which now about 20 per cent of their passengers do and opt out of all their other charges.
Michael O'Leary also told Nicky that anyone can get a Visa Electron card and therefore free flights are available to everyone and added that the fares are openly explained and fully agreed to by passengers

I could not stop laughing when the presenter flew all the way to Ireland to ask the MD why it was only available on Electron cards! A good advert for this card, and FREE flights no less just for users of Electron..Some Days are Diamonds Some Days are Stones,Sometimes the hard times won't leave meBSC 162:beer:Banktupt 22 Oct 2008 at 10am!0

Its the airport taxes that are the killer though with Ryanair!!! I bought a flight to Dublin last year at £5 return but cost me £42 in the end because of the taxes!!.

Couldn't agree more. I was in a similar situation - the airport taxes actually cost a bomb - in fact, it cost me more to fly to Dublin on Ryanair on their "free flights" than it cost me to fly return to visit family in the south of France on EasyJet!
So I guess Ryanair have to make money somewhere.Debt 30k in 2008.:o Cleared all my debt in 2013 and loving being debt free

Erm, ... if they're FREE flights, why do you have to pay for them at all (using Electron or not??)
Just a thought ...:D

Yep, good question!
I've been caught up in these "free flight" things before. The flights may be free but airport taxes and surcharges etc aren't!Debt 30k in 2008.:o Cleared all my debt in 2013 and loving being debt free

Oddly I do not think that was covered on the show, only that you could get the free flight ONLY with an electron card.
The only good free things are the newspapers boat trips to France for a quid and that was all I paid some years back, maybe they are the same now! and you pay far more.
Could not afford to even go for a quid these days! Some Days are Diamonds Some Days are Stones,Sometimes the hard times won't leave meBSC 162:beer:Banktupt 22 Oct 2008 at 10am!0 -
Oh come on - you can fly to Dublin for less than it would cost for the train/taxi/petrol to the airport... And how many times have you seen TV reporters being invited in for a chat with the MD - usual is the "you can't film here" etc. Wind back 20 years and try get a flight anywhere for less than a couple of hundred quid - big up indeed.0
