The week that could change everything for me……..

I don’t often post on the boards but I’m so nervous about my upcoming week that I felt it would be a good thing to share my thoughts here. And if anyone has been in a similar situation, your advice would be greatly appreciated.

My financial info…………my husband and I have a 15k loan which we’re paying back monthly until 2012.

Separately, we have 18k of credit card debt and we desperately want to get rid of this.

We’re in our mid twenties and we don’t feel we can start a family until we’re out of this mess. We’re also aware (since our lbm) that holidays and luxuries are also not possible for us anymore.

Our current plan is to pay off £600 per month and raise extra money wherever possible (we’re totally stretched already). This is going to take us 2 years at least! (if we’re lucky).

My husband is on an average salary and I’m on a very low salary. But I really enjoy my current job and workplace so I’ve always felt it was worth it.

But the strain of our debt is really starting to get to me. I’m scared about our future especially with this credit crunch. And I’m feeling so helpless.………..so out of the blue I applied for a new job last week. I’ve been offered an interview this Thursday. It’s the same role as I’m doing now but in a different environment. It’s a 7k salary rise! It will bring us in an extra £500 per month and it will mean we can pay our debt off a year earlier. Meaning we can start a family earlier…….or go travelling…….etc.

But i’m so confused because what if I end up hating the place and I’ve given up a job and workplace I really enjoyed.

I may not even get the job so I’m getting ahead of myself!

But I can’t stop thinking about it.

I would so badly love this opportunity to pay off our debts quickly and live a comfortable life, rather than daily struggles and worry.

But I’m also terrified I will lose my current work friends and the pleasure of working in a friendly place.

Has anyone else left a job they enjoyed for the sake of money? Was it a good move in your case?

Sorry for this rant but it really helps to write it all out. Thanks for listening!

I will let you know the outcome…….

No answer, but thought I'd bump it up for you....

    Good luck with your decision.
  • Hi Woosutt

I havent been in your exact situation but I do have a shed load of debt I feel I wont ever escape from and have this year actually turned down a job for better money because of other factors (work/life balance etc).

I think you have to consider whats more important to you - if its getting out of debt quicker then the new job could be ideal, theres no point worrying about the actual physical changes this will involve and whether they will be positive or negative at this stage. You never know - it could be even better than the place you work now but even if it wasn't, its a trade off for a happier home life and less debt stress to deal with - and maybe even a baby which is wonderful.

But if right now you are contented with your plan for paying the debt off more slowly and it being a harder slog, and you think that the enjoyment you get from work is priceless then maybe this is the more sensible option. You obviously get a lot of intangible benefits from the job you currently have (and how many people can really say that these days!?) so if this is too much of a loss then there is your answer.

Try and not stress about what you need to do until after the interview because until you know whether you get offered the job all of this is academic. Maybe it has raised some issues for the future though.

Good luck with the interview too and remember that quite often change is a good thing and a catalyst for progress and personal growth - even when it seems like a very scary thing at the time. ;)
Hoping for a calmer year in 2012
