Then surely the cars are worth more than £1100. You put £30 a month for road tax. That seems a lot - £360. I know our cars (Honda Jazz and Toyota Yaris) are not big, but each is £120 for road tax. Have you thought of changing the cars to something more economical and environmental? The £120 a year for a car maintenance won't be enough, you still have to do service every year.

How long 0% rate on Virgin for? Can you pay just minimum on it for a bit and repay as much as possible on Barclaycard in the meantime? That would help a bit with the interest.

OH's car is worth £1100, mine is worht £12500, I didnt put that down, as its on finance so it doesnt really count as if I were to sell it, I wouldnt see any of that money as it would go to the finance company. My car is £170 p/year and OH is £210 which is actually £31.66. My car came with TAX though so I wont have to pay that til next year. Changing cars isnt really an option atm, OH's is a diesel which we use for work and mine is a new economy engine, so we are trying to do our bit. That car maintenance should be £150, sorry. 2 MOT's @ £40 and 2 serives @ £35. With regards to the Virgin card, thats what we are doing - there is 13 months left and he is only making min payments to that card and chucking the rest at barclaycard, but theres never enough. thanks

personally the cars seem like a BIG sticking point. Do you NEED both cars for work? If not I would suggest that you try using just one car, or how about for 2 weeks you do just use one car? leave the other at home and see how you manage? Do you NEED such an expensive car? I understand how fab it is to have a new car but 12500 is a lot and the 180 you pay on it per month could be better used, giving you extra money to not only throw at debts but money to have a life with.

You have a very good deal on your rental property and are very lucky to have such a good inclusive price. It would be a shame to have to give it all up.
Debt free and plan on staying that way!!!!

In the weekdays, we use OH's car, my car goes to the other places, and I need it for when I go cleaning, also when I go to my weight loss meetings etc and he needs his car for seeing his family, helping his dad with work etc, so we do need 2 cars at the moment yes. Im not sacrifising my car because he got himself into debt - thats not fair on me, thats the one thing I have. We dont want to leave our rented place as its great - its a 4 bed detatched bunaglow as well so we really have been very lucky. But as the place is being sold - we have no choice. Thats why Im thinking the only way is to move home.

Well, diesel or not, but CO2 rating of F is really bad. And yours would be E, so that doesn't really shout economical to me, although some makes with small engines still have high CO2 emissions. Which car is cheaper to run? His diesel or your petrol (I assume you bought petrol car)?

I need to find where to do car service - as mine was £260 last ear, and it is just 4-year old Yaris!

Being sold - is not the same as has been sold in this current market situation.... Have they asked you to move out now or when they get a buyer? Or have they actually got a buyer?

  • How do you know its an F and E? Mine ( a petrol) is cheaper to run. We just get services at the local garage - a friend of ours. It's def sold - my cousin has bought it. And we have to be out by Jan09

    Road tax bands

Have a look there. You said how much it is, so it gives £210 to be F and £170 to be E band. If your car is cheaper to run, why don't you take your car to work every day? That will save a few pennies...

Ok, I am need to find a 'friend' that works in a garage... Both our services cost us way more than £200 each in last year. Mine is due in a month!

I know it is not what you would like to hear, but it might be more financially sensible to move in with your OH parents (I hate smoke too - it actually makes me feel nauseous sometimes), or try and negotiate with your parents that only he pays rent (don't tell him that, just say that they agreed to a reduced rate).

SecretSquirrel I would move back in with the parents. Just my personal opinion.

You have a great deal with the house you are in at the min and would be hard pressed to find something like it come Jan, no matter where you stay.

Its not ideal as now that you have been away from them going back will seem like a step backwards but its not, its a step towards being debt free.

Can i ask, are any of the debts yours other than the car finance? xx

  • ginvzt: thats an interesting site - thank you. Do you get yours serviced at the main dealership? Well my parents have said that they would charg us both rent, but they would put mine in another bank account that I can either have access to or just save it all up and then they will give it back to me. Which is why (obviously) Im routing for my parents place lol.

Kmac_Edin: Yeah we now that we should - it's really just deciding which parents to go to (I want to go to mine, and naturally he wants to go to his) No I only have the car finance, the rest are his. xx
